Take a Stand for Reconciliation: Bill C-262 and Orange Shirt Day

Take a Stand for Reconciliation: Bill C-262 and Orange Shirt Day

Take action for reconciliation! Honour truth! Act for Indigenous justice!

Urge Senators to Support the UN Declaration Act

Senators return to the Chamber this week. Bill C-262, the United Nations Declaration of the Rights on Indigenous People Act, is in second reading, after being introduced by Senator Murray Sinclair in June.

This Bill ensures that all laws in Canada will be aligned with the UN Declaration, which is a minimum standard to ensure that Indigenous peoples in Canada thrive..

Thanks to your efforts, the private members bill passed Third Reading with flying colours on May 30 after a lengthy review process. Let’s ensure that this Bill, which provides an introductory framework for justice and reconciliation, receives the support it needs for a swift passage through the Senate.

Participate in Orange Shirt Day

Wear an orange shirt on Sunday, September 30. Take a moment to remember those children and communities dramatically affected by the Indian Residential Schools System. Orange Shirt Day is inspired by Phyllis Jack Webstad who, on her first day at residential school in 1973, was stripped of her new orange shirt.

Take action! On Sunday, September 23, ask churches to invite people to wear orange shirts the following Sunday. Encourage workplaces, schools or community centres to participate on Friday, September 28. On Sunday, September 30 wear your orange shirt and encourage conversation and remembrance, including in churches (a link to a reflection and prayer is below). Take photos! Share on social media.
