The United Church of Canadas General Council is a denomination-wide gathering which meets every three years to elect a new Moderator and to approve new church policies.
In addition to 358 delegates called commissioners, approximately 250 guests, observers, youth, children, staff, and volunteers will be present for the week-long gathering. Commissioners are selected by the churchs 13 regional Conferences and represent an equal number of lay people and ministry personnel.
The 41st General Council of The United Church of Canada will take place at Carleton University, in Ottawa, Ontario from August 11 to 18, 2012.
If you have young people in your congregation that might be interested in engaging with other youth or with the church courts at the next General council... please note that there are two ways for youth to participate in General Council. They can be elected by your Conference to serve as a Commissioner at General Council, or chosen by your presbytery to participate in Youth Forum.
Each presbytery/district is invited to name one delegate at Youth Forum. If you have youth who you feel might benefit from this experience please contact your Presbytery because deadlines are fast approaching. (Please check with your Presbytery before you assume the deadline is passed) For more information or to download application forms visit: http://www.gc41.ca/youthforum/
Conferences are being encouraged to consider electing young adults and youth (aged 1530) to serve as commissioners at General Council, with the full privileges and responsibilities of being a commissioner. The role of commissioner at General Council will appeal to youth who are passionate about the decision-making processes and polity of the church. The nomination to the conference will come from your Presbytery, so please contact your Presbytery if you have interested youth.
