BILL PHIPPS

Bill served as Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 1997-2000, and as an international president of Religions for Peace 1998-2007. He retired as minister of Scarboro United Church in Calgary in 2007. His many involvements include:

  • He is co-founder and chair of Faith and the Common Good, a national interfaith network that seeks to bring peoples together to work for and heal the sacred Earth
  • The Peace Consortium at the University of Calgary
  • The Parkland Institute
  • The Canadian Friends of Neve Shalom/Wahat al Salaam
  • Raffi’s Child Honouring Advisory Council
  • Right Relations of the United Church of Canada (concerning relations with First Nations)
  • The Justice, Global and Ecumenical Relations of The United Church of Canada

Bill is the author of Cause for Hope: Humanity at the Crossroads, published in 2007 by Wood Lake Books, Kelowna, BC. Occasionally he writes for periodicals and newspapers.

Bill has enjoyed previous careers as a lawyer, community organizer, hospital chaplain and adult educator. He has an abiding involvement in social justice work, particularly relating to the health and safety of Earth, interfaith partners and First Nations. He has academic degrees from the University of Toronto, Osgoode Hall Law School and McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. He has been honoured with Honourary Doctorates from St. Stephen’s Theological College in Edmonton and from Victoria University at the University of Toronto. In 1992 he was awarded the Canada 125 Medal, and in 2005 he received the Alberta Centennial Medal.

MICHAEL BLAIR

Michael serves as Executive Minister of the Intercultural & Diverse Communities in Ministry Unit of The United Church of Canada. He is the former director of the Toronto Christian Resource Centre (CRC), which is a ministry of the Toronto South Presbytery serving the homeless and marginalized housed in Toronto’s eastern downtown area.. He has been speaking and preaching extensively about intercultural ministries, and offers prophetic wisdom and keen insights in becoming an intercultural church.

ADELE HALLIDAY

Adele is the Program Coordinator for Intercultural Engagement & Education in the Intercultural & Diverse Communities in Ministries Unit of The United Church of Canada. An educator, Adele has taught students and developed curricula in the greater Toronto area, in Kenya, and in Belize. She recently completed a Master of Education in Comparative, International, and Development Education, and with a focus on anti-racist education, equity, and social justice. She is passionate about the intercultural church, has offered leadership for many workshops, plenaries, and conferences in the area of intercultural ministries.

BARRY PRIDHAM

Barry Pridham is minister at Sydenham United Church, Brantford and presents in this workshop as a minister who has transformed the congregation into a truly intercultural community. Barry’s passion for interculturalism encourages others to develop deeper understandings that will strengthen their ministries in an intercultural world.
