Community World Day of Prayer Service

Community World Day of Prayer Service is Friday, March 5th at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Carmel-Zion United Church - at the corner of Church & Victoria Streets in Morriston with Duff’s Presbyterian, Knox Crieff Presbyterian and Crieff Hills Retreat & Conference Centre also participating in the service.

Each year women in a different country write the service. This year please join us and invite your friends and family to attend and learn more about The Republic of Cameroon, Africa and its unique culture and heritage. Join Christians in more than 170 countries around the world and 2,000 communities across Canada who will gather on the World Day of Prayer to pray and act in solidarity with the people of Camerooon.

The 2010 service is written by women in Cameroon and the theme is “Let Everything that has breath Praise God!”

Our speaker loves talking about the people and the great work that goes on very quietly but very effectively. Our guest is a volunteer 6 weeks out of every year since 2002, working for SHUMAS. SHUMAS is a NGO (non-governmental organization) created and run by local Cameroonians. They have many projects.

  • They build schools and provide school furniture
  • organize village women into groups for farming improvements and micro-credit loans
  • promote adult literacy
  • provide scholarships for children of impoverished families
  • give training to the handicapped in self-sustaining skills
  • bring back traditional organic farming methods to improve crops,
  • environmental projects for safe water, wind/solar energy, etc.

Our speaker will describe many of her experiences working as a volunteer in Cameroon.

Please join us. We’ll have beverage & snack after the service - a time to visit.

In Canada, WICC (Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada) co-ordinates and distributes the WDP service materials. With funds from offerings received at World Day of Prayer services, WICC provides project grants, supports the international WDR committee, covers the costs of distributing WDP resources throughout Canada and supports the ongoing work of WICC.
